Joint Institute for Nuclear Research

For several years the Department of experimental physics has been collaborating with Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, Dubna, (Russian Federation), where the students of the Faculty of Science may have their short and long term internships. Students can get acquainted and being actively involved in the performance of the experiments, elaborate their diploma and Ph.D. theses, or, later, to work there.

Joint Institute of Nuclear Research is an international research center for nuclear science. The agreement of its establishment was signed in March, 26th, 1956 by 12 countries of Eastern Europe. Czech Republic is one of the founding members of the SINR since 1956. In the year 1992 there were significant changes introduced into the operation of this international Resarch Institute. The new JINR statute was adopted, which laid the foundation for the functioning of this institution as an international scientific organization on the territory of Russian Federation.

The Institute has 7 laboratories, each with its own specialization: theoretical physics, high energy physics, heavy ion physics, condensed matter physics, nuclear reactions and information technology. In addition to these workplaces an internal part of JINR is also its University Center, which is in charge of the education of doctoral students and graduates in the field of nuclear physics.

Student program

In 2010, the agreement about special support of Czech universities students (see the full text of the Document) was signed between the governmental official of the Czech Republic and JINR Director. The agreement provides the possibility to send to JINR up to 16 doctoral students and graduates in a framework of a research part of their studies, while the educational part of their study is provided by Czech universities. The purpose of their stay is to obtain the necessary scientific material for the defense of the thesis in the domestic workplace. The stay is limited up to 3 years for PhD students and, responsively, 2 years for graduates. Students receive special support in the form of a salary and $12000/year to support the research activity of JINR. Students ‘research achievements are inspected on a regular basis. Currently in JINR takes place an extensive enhance of the conducted experiments, construction and modernization of the existing equipment, for example, NICA (Nuclotron-based Ion Collider facility) or Nanotech Center, and, therefore, there is a great demand for students and young researchers, who are supposed to become experts in the field.

Example of research work in JINR, Dubna in the laboratory of nuclear reactions (Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions), where the students of the Department of experimental physics are involved for a long time period:

  1. Synthesis and properties of super heavy nuclei (Z=112-118).
  2. Production and spectroscopy research of new neutron-redundant isotopes close to the neutron shells N = 126 and N = 152 in many nucleon transfer reactions.
  3. Development, implementation and testing of the modernized management system of the mass separator MASHA (Mass Analyzer of Super Heavy Atoms) with the use of electronics standard CompactRIO and WAGO-I/O-SYSTEM (PLC systems). Modernization, testing and implementation of a new system of data collection and diagnostics of the bunch using high speed digitizer and digital I/O modules of the standard PXI and PXIe.
  4. Development and testing of a new cryogenic gas-filled catcher and electromagnetic pre-separator.
  5. Development and modernization of the detection and registration systems for DGFRS (Dubna Gas-Filled Recoil Separator).
  6. Modernization of the multistrip detectors field and the development of an appropriate multichannel registration system for the detection of events connected with the emergence of the super heavy elements and their decay.
  7. Modernization of the detection system using DGFRS (double-sided silicon strip detector) with an increase in the number of spectroscopic channels to 176.


In the framework of the program, Erasmus+ it is possible to visit foreign universities and research workplaces for study and research stays during the Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral study programs.
